2010 Campus Campaign Kicks Off

September 24, 2010

During the past four years, Donate Life Illinois has been fortunate to work with student groups at 26 colleges on a successful campaign to register members of their campus communities as organ and tissue donors.

As this year’s campaign manager, I’m excited to announce the launch of the 2010 Campus Campaign and invite YOU to participate with us! Once again, our Campus Campaign will call on Illinois college students to help us reach our goal of 2,000 new registrations.

For college students, this is a great initiative that focuses solely on public education and registering members of your campus to be organ donors.

This year, we’re encouraging students to organize registration drives at existing campus events (such as health fairs or blood drives), or create events of their own. We will be providing incentives (t-shirts, wristbands and other fun giveaways) as well as a variety of documents to help you get started.

The Who’s and What’s to Hospital Development – Guest Post

April 20, 2010

Hello! I am Jennifer, the new intern at Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network. I’m attending Chicago State University – College of Pharmacy and completing a rotation for public health. My goal is to learn the steps involved with the whole process of organ donation. Hospital Development is a department of Gift of Hope I have yet to learn about due to the fact that most of the specialists’ time is spent out in the field. To relieve some of my curiosity I’ve interviewed Christopher Floss, a donation specialist, to help me learn about what Hospital Development is all about. He shared with me some of his responsibilities and how he contributes to the whole process. I hope you will find it as interesting as I did. - Jennifer

Q: What’s a typical work day like for you?

A: I recently started in my current position after serving Gift of Hope as a Family Support Services Coordinator for two and a half years. In that capacity, I was responsible for approaching families who are in the position of making end of life decisions. I guided them through the consent process and remained their “contact person” throughout the case time. In my new position, I will remain an active part of our efforts to reach out to families; however, I will be focusing my energy on ten larger hospitals, building relationships with staff so that when referrals are made we can facilitate the various components of our processes as efficiently as possible. As well, I will be the “first responder” to referrals made in my region of hospitals, helping hospital staff coordinate the best time and place to approach the topic of donation with donor families.

Q: What’s the most challenging part of your job?

A: The most challenging part of my job is helping families make the best decision regarding donation in a very difficult time in their lives. Sometimes it’s not easy to navigate the emotions that are present in such difficult times in their lives. However, I do my best to ensure that (1) a family is well-informed of the life-saving gift they can provide to a potential recipient and (2) they are cared for regardless of their decision.

Q: What’s the most rewarding part?

A: The most rewarding aspect of my job is that I have the opportunity to help save someone’s life by helping a donor family say “yes” to donation. As well, I sometimes marvel at how a donor family can receive much consolation and healing by consenting to donation on behalf of their loved one.

Q: What motivated you to get involved with the donation community through your position at Gift of Hope?

A: I’ve always felt the need to help others achieve their highest potential by giving of themselves to others in need. That’s what motivates me to contribute to the mission of Gift of Hope. I truly believe that a donor family’s gift through organ and tissue donation is someone else’s hope for life. Being an instrument in that “gift of hope” is what motivates me to do my best in my job.

DePaul’s Blue Live Savers – Guest Post

April 9, 2010

Whitney, a DePaul graduate student and member of Student’s for Organ Donation, explains the process of establishing the group on her campus. Anybody interested in doing the same, please email donatelifeillinois@gmail.com and we will get you set-up. – Nick

________________________________________________

In January, we formed DePaul’s chapter of Students for Organ Donation – fittingly called DePaul’s Blue Life Savers!

We are excited to be making an impact in the DePaul community. For those of you considering starting a group at your college, we’re happy to report that there were far fewer hoops than we anticipated in getting our chapter off of the ground. We first applied to be recognized as an official student group through DePaul’s student life office, which was a quick and painless process. We then met with Joslyn, from Gift of Hope, and she provided us with the information and materials about the organization and our role as a student group. At the end of January, we secured a booth at the DePaul student involvement fair and introduced our organization to the student body. Since then, we’ve held our first registration drive and held our kick-off meeting to recruit more group members on March 3.

The most challenging aspect we have faced so far in this process has been raising awareness among DePaul’s student body – a key component to our first organ donation drive was visibility. Luckily, we had Morgan D’Organ join us for the registration drive – not many people can ignore a six foot by six foot giant pink organ! Morgan was a big hit (students were lining up to have their picture taken with him!) and our results were great – we ran the registration for two hours on the Thursday before Valentine’s Day and more than 25 students registered. We saved more than 600 lives that night!

Gift of Hope has been a fantastic resource for us as we work toward our goals of raising awareness and increasing the number of registered donors in the Illinois organ and tissue donor registry. We would especially like to thank Joslyn for her energy and creativity in helping us navigate this process. If you are thinking about starting a chapter at your school, DO IT! You’ll be amazed how much fun you can have saving lives.

We are actively recruiting for our organization and welcome any DePaul readers to join our chapter of Students for Organ Donation! Interested students can learn about our upcoming events on our Facebook page – Blue Life Savers of DePaul, by visiting our website at www.bluelifesavers.org, or by emailing bluelifesavers@bluelifesavers.org.
