An Introduction to Tissue Donation & Allosource – Guest Post

Organizations like the Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donation Network and Donate Life Illinois give the promise of life to people in their most fragile state of need.  At AlloSource, we are proud to help make those possibilities go full-circle. We are one of the nation’s largest non-profit providers of skin, bone and soft tissue allografts for use in surgical procedures and we are committed to helping maximize the potential of human tissue donations with the help of our valued organ procurement organizations.

While donors are aware of the life-saving gift they commit to by registering, many don’t realize how far their gift can truly go.  Tissue donation is still lesser understood than organ donation, but it can also have a life-saving impact. Approximately 1.5 million tissue transplants are performed each year. Allograft tissue can: save patients facing life-threatening burns, allow athletes with torn ligaments or tendons to heal and regain strength, and repair musculoskeletal structures, teeth, skin, and spinal components in patients of all varieties. None of this would be possible without the generosity of each tissue donor and the strength of their families. They look beyond their own grief to envision the possibilities that lie beyond.

We have recently started a blog at www.AllograftPossibilites.org, in order to better educate both the medical community and the public on the topic of tissue donation and the science of allograft transplantation.  At www.AllograftPossibilities.org we share inspiring stories from tissue recipients and donor families and post the latest news and research regarding allograft tissue transplantation. We hope you will visit to learn more about the science of tissue donation and the hope and possibilities it provides every day to so many.
