Hospitals Fly Donate Life Flags to Honor Donors

To honor individuals who give the gift of life through organ donation, Advocate Christ Medical Center and OSF Saint Francis Medical Center are now raising a Donate Life flag in front of their facilities after each donation. At both hospitals, the premier flying of the flag was in honor of pediatric donors.

July 23 was the first time a Donate Life flag was raised at Advocate Christ, flying for 72 hours. The donor family was given its own flag as a memento.

On June 10, a Donate Life flag waved in front of the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center chapel. The flag will be flown for 24 hours every time there is an organ donor—living or deceased—and then given to the donor for living donation or the donor’s family for deceased donation.

(Left to right) Tom Davis, Gift of Hope in-house coordinator; Scott Keating, Advocate Christ’s sergeant for Public Safety; and Peggy Steinmetz, RN, MS, clinical outcomes specialist and member of the hospital’s medical intensive cardiac care team raise the Donate Life flag on July 23.
